The story of Pawleys Island Pier
Pawleys Island is one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, known for its 'arrogantly shabby' charm. While the island does not currently have a standing commercial fishing pier (the original pier was destroyed by hurricanes), the beach and creek access points offer excellent surf fishing. The island's laid-back atmosphere and rich history make it a unique fishing destination on the southern end of the Grand Strand.

1726
Colonial Origins
Pawleys Island was first used as a summer retreat by rice plantation owners seeking relief from malaria on the mainland.
1800s
The Gray Man Legend
The island became famous for the legend of the Gray Man, a ghost said to appear before hurricanes to warn residents.
1989
Hurricane Hugo
Hurricane Hugo caused devastating damage to Pawleys Island, destroying many historic structures and the fishing pier.
2020s
Surf Fishing Paradise
Today Pawleys Island offers excellent surf fishing from the beach, with a quieter, more natural experience than the commercial piers.
