Reading Barometric Pressure Like a Pier Regular

Falling pressure ahead of a front is the most reliable free tip in saltwater fishing.

The short version

Fish feed hardest on a falling barometer, in the twelve to twenty-four hours before a front arrives. They shut down during and just after the pressure bottoms out.

What to watch

  • Above 1020 mb and steady — slow, fish deep and slow down your presentation
  • Falling from 1015 mb — the window; fish it hard
  • Rising after a front — expect a day or two of tough fishing

The pressure trend chart on each pier page plots the last 72 hours so you can see the slope rather than guess at it.
